About Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds
Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds [ca. 2010] is the group created by the former lead guitarist of Oasis. Noel Gallagher [b. 1967] and his brother Liam—both from Manchester, U.K.—were stalwarts of that iconic 1990s rock band, but Noel elected to leave the group in August 2009 after a series of internal disputes proved irresolvable. Noel’s plans to record a solo album resulted in the formation of High Flying Birds. The band includes former Oasis keyboard player Mike Rowe, plus Jeremy Stacey (drums) of The Lemon Trees, Russell Pritchard (bass guitar) of The Zutons, and Tim Smith (lead guitar).
The group’s self-titled debut album was released in October 2011 on the Sour Mash label. The tracks were recorded over the course of many months, split between studios in Los Angeles and London (Abbey Road Studios among them). The lead single, “The Death of You and Me,” peaked at Number Two on the UK Indies Chart. The album itself debuted at the top spot on the UK Albums Chart and had sold more than half a million copies in the U.K. by January 2012. Gallagher has said that the name of the group was inspired by lyrics from a Jefferson Airplane song, as well as homage to Fleetwood Mac.
Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds is already planning a second album, this one to be produced in collaboration with the psychedelic rock ensemble, Amorphous Androgynous, which is led by Garry Cobain. It is reportedly due out in late 2012.
