About Glee Cast
Glee is a Television comedy drama series which relies heavily on musical content. It is set in a high school and the action of the story is punctuated by a series of set-piece performances where the characters sing a variety of popular songs. These can sometimes be chart hits, or old show tunes. The songs are separate performances to the main story, as opposed to the story-telling songs of a standard musical. The songs chosen are used to illustrate the themes of the episode, to enhance atmosphere and mood.
The songs are arranged for the Cast by Adam Anders, with additional choreography by Zach Woodlee. Depending on the song itself, a different actor will be offered the lead vocal and in the main these are ensemble pieces.
A number of popular artists, including Billy Joel, Rihanna and Madonna have allowed Glee free rein to use their music, sensing the commercial potential of this show. Somewhat inevitably, a series of albums are planned. These are being released by Columbia records. The first such album, 'Glee: The Music, Volume 1,' was released in the US on the 3rd of November 2009 and has since gone platinum with over 662,000 sales in the US alone. Songs by the Glee cast are also available individually for the show's audience to download.
The second was released soon after, on the 8th of December in the same year. This has reached sales of 454,000 in the US, hitting the number three spot at its highest point on the chart. More will surely follow as the show's production schedule continues.
