About Florence and The Machine
Florence and the Machine is the name used by the singer Florence Welch, who is the London-born daughter of Evelyn Welch, noted Dean for Arts at Queen Mary, University of London.
The 'Machine' in her name refers to a childhood joke in her first band ('Florence Robot is a Machine'), which featured her current bandmate Isabella Summers (or, in the original band, 'Isabella Machine'). It also loosely refers to her wide-ranging supporting cast of musicians and collaborators. She is an indie artist whose music shows a strong soul influence, and has recently won great critical acclaim from the BBC and the rest of the British music media.
Her debut album, 'Lungs' was released on July the 6th, 2009, and spent 5 weeks at number 2 behind the recently-deceased Michael Jackson. It subsequently reached number one status in the album charts, as well as having widespread success across European markets.
In the USA,'Lungs' debuted at number 17 on the Billboard Chart.
Singles from the album have included 'Kiss With a Fist' (which was also on the soundtrack to the horror film 'Jennifer's Body'), 'The Dog Days are Over,' 'Rabbit Heart' and 'Drumming Song.' Florence and the Machine have also recorded and released a video for a cover of Candi Staton's 'You Got The Love.'
In 2009 they also toured extensively, playing the Glastonbury, Reading and T in The Park festivals. They were also one of the featured acts on that year's NME Awards tour.
Florence and The Machine are currently recording their second album with producer Paul Epworth.
