About Birdy

Jasmine Van den Bogaerde, known under the stage name of Birdy, was born on the 15th of May 1996 in Lymington England.

Her music heritage comes from her family. Her mother is a concert pianist and Jasmine learned the piano at the age of five and began to write her own music at the age of seven. She is currently studying at a small state school of visual arts, Priestlands School in Lymington. Her great uncle has also been a notable actor, Sir Dirk Bogarde.

She made her break in the music world in 2008, when she won the UK talent contest, Open Mic. She won the prizes in two categories, in the under 18s and the Grand Prize in front of 10000 competitors. At the competition she performed her own song, So Be Free, which she sang in front of 2000 people.

In 2009, Birdy gave a live performance on piano for BBC Radio 3’s Pianothon in London.

In 2011, Birdy released her first single, a cover of Bon Iver’s Skinny Love. The single became a hit in the UK charts. It was B-listed on Xfm and was also chosen by DJ Fearne Cotton to be the “Record of the Week”, thus being added to BBC Radio 1’s B-list playlist with its release in March 2011.

Her second single, released later in 2011, Shelter, has also enchanted many listeners, Shelter entering the UK charts at 50. This single is the promotional single for her new album, Shelter, a cover music album, later in July 2011.
