About Alexandra Stan
Alexandra Stan [b. 1989] was born in the Black Sea town of Constanţa, Romania. Her rise in popularity from such an obscure starting point is perhaps one of the clearest indications to date that the pop music scene is truly international in scope. She participated in singing competitions from a very early age, and she also sang at the Mamaia Music Festival, but her professional breakthrough came thanks to her work with the team of Marcel Prodan and Andrei Nimirschi of Maan Studios, Romania’s top music producers.
The first single Stan released through Maan Studios—“Lollypop” [2009]—received almost nonstop airplay in her native country, but it was the immense exposure she enjoyed from the accompanying music video that helped build her following as far away as the U.K., USA, Canada, Russia, and Israel. More singles followed in 2010, leading to a club and concert tour that capitalized on her songs reaching Number One in Spain, Denmark, Italy, Austria, Germany and Switzerland, and charting into the top five in such countries as Belgium, Finland, Netherlands, and even New Zealand.
In 2011, Stan was the recipient of a number of continental European awards, including acknowledgment by the Romanian Music Awards and MTV Europe. In August 2011, she released her first album, Saxobeats, a 13-track compilation (eight original songs plus five remixes) on the French Play On/Jeff Records label. The album is a mixture of various upbeat genres, including dance, synth-pop and rhythm-n-blues, plus one song performed with rapper Carlprit. She has since signed a recording contract with Ultra Records, which released Saxobeats into the North American market.
